Thinking this gorgeous morning of expectations and I have to tell you I didn’t have many expectations for Mexico since I had a strong mix of nerves and worries before travelling here with family.
Now I’m here and it’s beautiful, peaceful and romantic. It’s most definitely the place stories are made of. I mean, I even saw mariachi bands dressed like the day of the dead as if straight from a movie.
My point of all this is expectations.
Expectations can truly ruin many things, including your writing. The thing with writing is you can’t expect to get feedback, you can’t expect to get good comments, you can’t expect to have people around you build you up when some people are genetically geared to break you down with every little critical piece they can.
Expectations can break your heart, bring a tear to your smiling eyes. The best way to live- I don’t fucking know, but what I do know is when I submit a query or a contest submission, I may wish upon wish for the writing to get accepted and win or be published, but I certainly won’t let expectations stop me from trying again. Because at the end of everything, an expectation is quite literally demanding something of someone else. So you do you boo, and stay strong in what you want. If you want to be a published writer, keep trying until the day you die. Expect nothing and demand the commitment only from yourself.
Truly yours,
Norma Rrae
